RAITT PICKS UP BEST AMERICANA ALBUM GRAMMY
Veteran Grammys favorite Bonnie Raitt carried the torch for an extremely slim field of classic rock acts at last night’s Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, taking home the Best Americana Album trophy for her comeback album Slipstream. Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson was on hand to accept the Best Historical Album Grammy for The Smile Sessions deluxe box set. The classic rock highlight of last night’s show came in the form of an all-star tribute to the late Levon Helm of The Band, which included Elton John. Finally, Police man Sting participated in a tribute to Bob Marley.
STARS HONOR SPRINGSTEEN AT MUSICARES GALA
The music industry on Friday in Los Angeles honored Bruce Springsteen as MusiCares 2013 Person of the Year, handed to the superstar for his outstanding artistic achievement and personal philanthropic work. MusiCares is the charity wing of the Grammys and the recording Academy, dedicated to providing healthcare and financial assistance to members of the musical community. Artists on hand to pay tribute to the honoree included Jackson Browne, Patti Smith, Sting, Emmylou Harris, Mavis Staples, Mumford & Sons, Alabama Shakes, Kenny Chesney, Tom Morello, Ben Harper and Zac Brown.
HAWAII’S PROPOSED PRIVACY BILL DUBBED STEVEN TYLER ACT
A proposed Hawaii State Senate Bill 465 has been dubbed the Steven Tyler Act, after the Aerosomith frontman, who along with fellow Hawaii resident and rock star Mick Fleetwood, on Friday appeared before a Senate hearing to endorse the act. In a nutshell, SB465 would provide celebrities a legal course of action when photographed while engaged in “personal or family activity” and have a reasonable expectation of privacy. Basically the bill is aimed at keeping aggressive paparazzi in check, similar to the California Civil Code Section 1708.8 adopted in 1998.
STEWART SHELVES SPRING TOUR; PUSHES TREK BACK TO FALL
Two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Rod Stewart has postponed his “Live the Life” tour will fellow Hall of Famer Steve Winwood. A message on Stewart’s website reads: “To accommodate the finishing pre-production and spring promotion of his first original rock studio album in almost 20 years, Rod Stewart has pushed back his Spring tour with Steve Windood – which will now begin in October.” The 10-date trek runs from October 17 in Greensboro NC through December 15 in Toronto.
‘RAIDING THE ROCK VAULT’ BEGINS YEAR-LONG RUN IN LAS VEGAS
A treasure of real-life rock stars bring the history of rock and roll to life in the upcoming stage performance “Raiding the Rock Vault,” kicking off a year-long run March 9 at the LVH Theater at the Las Vegas Hotel & Casino. Boasting “The greatest set list ever,” the nightly show (dark on Fridays) uses narration, singing, acting and visually stimulating footage to take the audience on a musical journey spanning 1948 through 1989, and features live performances from an all-star band of all-time rock anthems from the Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Van Halen, AC/DC, Journey, Queen and Deep Purple, just to name a few. UNRELEASED JEFF HEALEY BAND NUGGETS DUE ON CD 2/26
A treasure trove of previously unreleased gems found in the vaults of the Jeff Healey Band have been gathered by Eagle Records and will be available on the February 26 release of the CD House On Fire. In all, eleven studio rarities and demos comprise the disc, including covers of Bruce Springsteen’s “Adam Raised a Cain” and Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight,” plus Healey originals like the instrumental “Bish Bang Boof” and the title track.
JOEY RAMONE’S RECORD COLLECTION, CLOTHES FOR SALE
Fans interested in adding albums and clothing once owned by Ramones frontman Joey Ramone to their personal memorabilia catalog will get their shot at acquiring the late punk rocker’s personal album collection, clothes, passport, rolodex and handwritten lyrics when they al go up for auction. There is a minimum bid of $500 attached to the auction, which runs February 14 through the 21st through RR Auction.
